  • When I realized I wanted (and could!) write poetry: Poet Kate Daniels, during a reading at Creighton University, prefaced one of her poems with some comments about how students probably wonder what faculty do behind the closed doors of their offices. Then she read her poem “Disjunction” and I remember thinking Wow, you can write poetry about that? I have been trying to make similar wows happen in my poems ever since. Thanks, Kate.
  • I am currently a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) certified football official. I only have one season of experience under my belt but just recently received an invitation to join a crew that does varisty, JV, freshmen, and youth games. I will be their line judge next season, working the sideline opposite the head linesman and chain crew. Good thing for the coaches on my sideline I've been working on my diplomacy skills.
  • I have been homebrewing with good friends since 2005 because we figured if we couldn’t get high-quality microbrews, then we’d make them ourselves. Now I have been planted in one of the liveliest beer cultures in the United States: Wisconsin. I work a few days a week at the Wine & Hop Shop, Madison's best homebrew shop; I also help Page McCormick craft his fine brews at House of Brews. Brew on!
